US Open, second round
Daniil Medvedev – Artur Rinderkensh 6-2, 7-5, 6-3
Daniil Medvedev is in the third round of the US Open after a 6-2, 7-5, 6-3 win over Artur Rinderkens. Thus, the world No. 1 continues the defense of his title from 2021 with ease. For him, this is his fifth consecutive reaching this stage of the tournament in New York and it comes exactly 3 years after a legendary speech that turned the Russian into a tennis player to whom no one can be indifferent.
On August 30, 2019, Medvedev became famous with his message to the audience after a victory over Feliciano Lopez, which came in an extremely hostile atmosphere for him with nearly 2 hours of endless booing. “I want you all to know when you go to bed tonight that I won because of you. The energy you give me now will last me for the next five games. The more you do it, the more I will earn,” Medvedev said at the time.
Well, gradually the audience in New York began to appreciate Medvedev, and three years later he has a lot more supporters among viewers. The win over Rinderkensch was his 20th in his last 22 US Open appearances.
“Overall I’m happy with my level in the third set, it’s great. By the end of the match I was getting better and better. At the same time, the victory is most important, three sets. I’m looking forward to the next round,” he said after the success over the Frenchman.
Indeed, Daniil had no particular problems with his opponent – a high percentage of the first and second serve guaranteed him three sets without a breakthrough and only three opportunities for Rinderkensch. In turn, Medvedev converted 5 of his 17 opportunities and converted 34 winners in the match.
Next up is a clash with China’s Yibing Wu with the potential for a fourth-round clash with Nick Kyrgios. “The most important thing is to win, to stay in the tournament, to go as far as possible, I will try to raise my level when the opponents become stronger. Eventually you’ll have to meet someone who has a Grand Slam or something.”
Wu defeated Nuno Borges 6-7(3), 7-6(4), 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 to become the first Chinese player in history to reach the third round of the US Open and the first ever in the third round of a Ko-Sin-Shie Slam at Wimbledon in 1946.
