US Open, second round
Leila Fernandez – Lyudmila Samsonova 3-6, 6-7(3)
After the third day of the US Open 2022, both finalists from last year’s edition are already out of the tournament. A day after Emma Radukanu, her fate was followed by Leila Fernandez, who lost 3-6, 6-7(3) to the in-form Lyudmila Samsonova.
Throughout the Grandstand match, it was the Russian who dictated the tempo and it was largely Fernandez’s battle to survive her own service games.
Samsonova used her opening shot perfectly and naturally did not give the Canadian a single chance to break, while she had 13 opportunities in turn. Of them, she realized only 2 in the first part, but that was enough for the success.
Fernandez will drop quite a bit in the rankings after the early exit, while Samsonova continues her winning streak. She won the titles in Washington and Cleveland and now has 12 straight victories. She also has 16 consecutive sets to her credit.
Her next opponent will be Alexandra Krunic, who defeated Barbora Krejcikova 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.
Another in-form tennis player in the person of Caroline Garcia also continues with victories – 6-3, 6-1 over Ana Kalinskaya. In the third round, an intriguing match awaits us between the Frenchwoman and Bianca Andreescu. The Canadian defeated Beatrice Haddad Maia 6-2, 6-4.
In the third round is also the great hope of the hosts Koko Goff. She had problems in the second set, but still did not allow it to reach the third against Gabriela Rousse – 6-2, 7-6(4).
It also guarantees a super clash between her and Madison Keys in the third round. Earlier in the day, Keys survived a 6-4, 6-7, 7-6(6) loss against Camila Giorgi.
