Every transfer window has its quirks and some oddities. Without a doubt, this also applies to the summer transfer window of 2022, which in the top five leagues ended on September 1. One of the most curious stories is from the last hours and is related to the attacker of Olympique Marseille Bamba Dieng.
Leeds have reached an agreement with Marseille for the transfer of the 22-year-old striker. The English club had to pay 10 million pounds for him.
The 22-year-old was due to travel to the UK for a medical to finalize his move to the team when Nice intervened.
Fulham were also in talks for Dieng on the final day of the summer transfer window, but Nice, who have strengthened with Aaron Ramsey, Kasper Schmeichel and Nicolas Pepe so far this summer, appear to have stolen the 22-year-old forward from under Jesse Marsh’s nose as well.
The Senegal striker was at the airport to fly to England when Nice contacted his agents and offered him better terms and a five-year contract.
Leeds were so confident of signing Dieng on the final day of the summer transfer window that even president Andrea Radridzani welcomed him on Twitter, while confirming the club’s interest in PSV Eindhoven striker Cody Gakpo.
Radridzani tweeted: “Let’s welcome Bamba Dieng and we will continue to work on bringing Gakpo. Now it’s time to focus on the field and support our new project and the great work that Jesse and his team are doing.”
A few hours later, the Leeds president admitted the club had “screwed up” as the deal fell through, but still felt the summer transfer window had been a very successful one for the team.
“Part of the madness on the last day of the transfer window. We were screwed, it happens to even the best. We made a great market, we planned and fulfilled our goals at a very early stage”, commented Andrea Radridzani.
The curious thing is that Bamba Dieng did not pass the medical in Nice and his transfer is still not officially a fact anyway. However, the deal could be completed by the end of the day on Friday thanks to the wild card rule in French football. The rule means that a deal between two French clubs can be concluded after the summer transfer window closes and before the winter one opens.
