The documentary follows Bear’s 3-day trip to Ukraine

In the unique documentary of Warner Bros. Discovery, War Zone: Bear Grylls Meets President Zelensky Survival expert and former member of the British Special Air Force, Bear Grylls finds himself in the middle of a battlefield, 25 years after he left the military. At the invitation of President Volodymyr Zelensky himself, Grylls is visiting Ukraine, badly hit by Russian airstrikes but still resisting military action. During his three-day trip to the country, Bear got one of the most realistic experiences of his life – meeting and hearing the stories of Ukrainians while getting to know the real Volodymyr Zelensky, one of the most talked about personalities in the world right now.

War rages on Europe’s border as Russia tries to seize control of Ukraine. For Bear Grylls, a familiar face on Discovery’s survival shows, it’s a challenging adventure in the interior of Ukraine. He visits a war-weary country to meet and tell the stories of its citizens. Bear walks the streets of Kyiv, accompanied by President Zelensky, who tells him more about himself. He also interviews ordinary citizens affected by the horrors of war and who lost their loved ones, but not their hope for the upcoming victory.

Years of survival training can never prepare you for entering an active war zone, and Bear and his team are taking huge risks. Bear’s goal is to meet the commander-in-chief of Ukraine in Kiev, but before that he needs to get to the capital. It is a country under constant threat of missile strikes as Russia tries to plunge its neighbor into total darkness by attacking its energy infrastructure.

This movie isn’t just about meeting the president, it’s about Bear’s journey to Kiev itself and what he sees along the way. In these hours and locations, he will meet the people of Ukraine who are trying to endure and survive this war. With the observational documentary approach, we see what life is like for these people. The camera crew also reached the old front line in the town of Irpin, just 10 kilometers from the capital Kyiv. There, Bear meets Alexander, a soldier who was a civilian before the war began. Stories of heroism, survival and tragedy have been captured on camera, such as that of journalist Alina, who lost her father in the war.

This journey is unlike any other Bear has taken before. He’s not the survival expert here. His role is to learn from other people, to see what they’ve been through and how they’re dealing with it. When he meets with the president, Bear wants to know who the man is behind the public image. To see what life is like for him away from the podium. He will learn how Ukraine survives this war during this dark winter. The meeting does not take place in an official setting, but during a friendly walk around the city of Kiev, where Bear has the chance to get to know the real Vladimir – the man beyond the headlines in the journalistic materials.

Watch Warzone: Bear Grylls Meets President Zelensky this Sunday at 10:00 p.m. only on Discovery and Monday, 3/27 at 8:00 p.m.
