The teams of Canada and Latvia will face each other in the semifinals of the world ice hockey championship. Canadians prevailed in Tampere over Finland 4:1 (1:0, 1:0, 2:1), while Latvia beat Sweden 3:1 (1:0, 0:1, 2:0).
Jack Quinn opened the scoring for Team Canada in the first period against hosts Finland in Tampere in front of more than 11,500 spectators. The Canadians made it 3-0 with goals from Samuel Blé and Michael Carcone before Teemu Hartikainen pulled one back for the Finns. Tyler Toffoli made it 4-1 for Canada on an empty net two minutes before the end of regular time as the Finnish team took many risks.
In the last quarter-final, Latvia beat Sweden in Riga. Dans Lokmelis opened the scoring for the hosts in the first period, but Timothy Lijergen equalized for the Swedes in the second half. Latvia took advantage late on and won thanks to goals from Miks Indrasis and Yanix Yaks.
Canada and Latvia will play their semi-final tomorrow, and the other semi-final, also on Saturday, will pit the USA against Germany.
