Ron DeSantis announces his entry into the US presidential race on Twitter

Twitter’s chief engineer announced he was leaving the company a day after the launch of Ron DeSantis’ US presidential campaign on the platform was hit by technical problems, the BBC reports.

The governor of Florida, considered the most serious competitor to Donald Trump for the Republican nomination for the presidential election next year, chose to announce his candidacy in a conversation with Elon Musk on “Twitter”. However, the live broadcast was delayed by almost half an hour, which Twitter attributed to excessive interest in the event.

In his farewell tweet as an employee of the company, Foad Dabiri did not specify whether his departure was directly related to the blunder, only: “After almost four incredible years at Twitter, yesterday I decided to leave the nest.”

Dabiri, who was the engineering head of Twitter’s growth organization, adds that he “lived through two different eras” at the company, before and after it was acquired by multibillionaire Elon Musk last year.

He says: “Working with @elonmusk has been extremely educational and it’s been enlightening to see how his principles and vision are shaping the future of this company.”

More than 80% of the company’s workforce has been laid off since Musk bought it.

Problems with Twitter’s live broadcast on Wednesday delayed the launch of Desantis’s bid for the Republican presidential nomination, and when it finally began, hundreds of thousands of users had already left the platform, the BBC recalled.

At its peak, the announcement of DeSantis’ inclusion in the presidential race attracted more than 600,000 listeners, but according to Reuters, less than half stayed until the end.

Trump called DeSantis’ start to the campaign a “disaster” and said he himself was doing very well in the polls among supporters and members of the Republican Party.

Musk, who also runs car maker Tesla and rocket company SpaceX, bought Twitter for $44 billion in October last year.

Speaking to the BBC last month, he said cutting Twitter’s staff from almost eight thousand people to around 1,500 had not been easy. Musk laid off thousands of employees, including engineers responsible for site operations and troubleshooting technical issues.
