COVID-19 vaccine maker Pfizer https://www.dnevnik.bg/Biontech has agreed with the European Commission to reduce the number the EU must buy and move the delivery deadline to 2026 ., Reuters reported on Friday.

The agreement, which will be officially announced later in the day, comes after months of negotiations to adjust the contract, which was concluded on behalf of European countries for the supply of 1.8 billion doses of vaccines (900 million and an option to buy another 900 million . doses) in 2022-2023.

The European Commission was tasked by governments to secure a change to the treaty due to the global glut of vaccines against COVID-19 and declining interest in immunization in the EU, where 73% of the population is vaccinated.

About half or more of the first 900 million doses from that contract have yet to be delivered. The EU has not indicated that it will take advantage of the additional option.

The change in the contract reduces by about a third the number of remaining doses that the EU must buy. But it will have to pay a fee for each canceled dose, Reuters reported, citing its source.

The European Commission and Pfizer declined to provide details of the arrangement.

In March, the Bulgarian government accepted the position of Health Minister Asen Medzhidiev to request the termination of the contract with “Pfizer”https://www.dnevnik.bg/”Biontech” for Bulgaria, as there is no interest in vaccination, the preparations do not work against “Omicron” ” variant of the coronavirus, as well as the European Commission to buy back the unused Bulgarian quantities.

The European Commission refuted the health minister about the effectiveness of the vaccines, but said it was in talks with the manufacturer to change the contract at the request of several countries.
