Borussia Dortmund are through to the third round of the German Cup after a narrow 1-0 win at home to Hoffenheim. The only goal in the match came at the end of the first half and was the work of Marco Reus (43′). Pellegrino Matarazzo’s side finished a man down as Ozan Kabak received a second yellow and red card respectively for a foul on Doniel Mallen.
The visitors had an excellent opportunity to take the lead in the second minute when Ilas Bebu first got to a pass in the penalty area, but Gregor Kobel saved and Berisha’s cross deflected off the post. Subsequently, Edin Terzic’s alumni were almost complete masters of what was happening on the field. They missed a number of good chances and the work of wingers Julian Brandt and Jamie Bynow-Gitens was well supported by Marco Reus and Yusseg Mukoko. They missed a couple of excellent scoring chances to get to the 43rd minute when another break down the left caught unprepared defenders in whitewash and this time Reus converted to make it 1-0.
Borussia Dortmund started the second half on a high note as they missed two good chances to extend their lead within the first five minutes, but strikes from Bynow-Gitens and Youssoufa Mukoko missed the mark. Gradually, the home team fell back into further positions, clearly wanting to defend their lead, and the quality of football dropped significantly. The visitors from Hoffenheim made a few more interesting attacks, but were never able to get a real scoring chance.

On Saturday, Edin Terzic’s players will face Bayern (Munich) in the biggest derby of German football.
