After almost ten years together, George and Amal Clooney seem to be one of the most stable couples in Hollywood, and also one of the most glamorous.
Before he met the beautiful lawyer, the “Emergency Room” star was Hollywood’s eternal bachelor, a heartthrob. Amal Alamuddin was building a successful career as a defender of human rights. Today, the two cannot imagine their lives without each other, have two twin children and live in a house on Lake Como.
George meets Amal for the first time in his own house. In July 2013, a friend of his asked if he could bring a girlfriend to his home on Lake Como, Italy. They are just passing through the country on their way to Cannes.
“The funny thing was that my mum and dad were visiting so my parents were there. And we just talked, we talked all night. I got her email because she was going to send me pictures of my parents. That’s how we started writing to each other. I didn’t know if he wanted to go out with me, I just thought we were friends.”
In October of that year, George and Amal were spotted dining together at Berners Tavern in London. At that time, the actor was there for the recordings of the music of Monuments Men at Abbey Road Studios as the film’s director.
“Amal said, ‘Let’s go to this place.’ It was one of those places that is incredibly modern and chic. And when we came out, there were 50 paparazzi. But she handled it like a champ.”
That same year, the two are together at Christmas.
In February 2014, they went on safari in Kenya.
“Amal loves giraffes, it’s her favorite animal. She went to Giraffe Manor, where giraffes stick their heads out the windows and kiss them. I had a picture of her looking back and smiling at those giraffes. I said to myself, “I think I’m going to ask her to marry me.”
I was on my knees for 20 minutes waiting for her to say yes because she was so shocked.
In March 2014, the couple traveled to the Seychelles and Tanzania, then to New York and Hollywood.
In April 2014, news broke that George Clooney had proposed to Amal Alamuddin. He described the proposal as a “terrible” moment.
In September 2014, George and Amal made their official debut as a couple at a charity event in Tuscany, where Amal also showed off her diamond and emerald engagement ring.
The wedding took place on September 27, 2014 in an intimate ceremony at the luxurious Aman Canal Grande resort in Venice. Among the guests were Matt Damon, John Krasinski, Emily Blunt, as well as other close friends of the newlyweds.
“We didn’t tell anyone else we were going to do it, but eventually someone found out. My God! Once people found out, it became an event. We took a bus from here to Venice, then we got on a boat, and after we got on the boat, there were so many paparazzi and so many people waiting there. We were sitting in the boat and I said, “You know what? Why are we hiding? Why are we hiding? We should not be ashamed of it. We got up and waved,” says the “Ocean’s Gang” actor.
On the big day, George Clooney wore a Giorgio Armani suit and the bride wore an Oscar de la Renta dress.
Their honeymoon is away from the limelight – at their estate in the English countryside.
In January 2015, Amal accompanied George to the Golden Globes, where he received a Lifetime Achievement Award. It was their red carpet debut as a married couple. In May, the Clooneys attended their first Met Gala.
“She changed everything about what I thought my future was going to be — my personal future. I have always been optimistic about the world. However, I have not always been completely optimistic about what will happen to me personally. But now I am,” George Clooney said in an interview from the time. However, the actor admitted that his worldview has not yet changed enough to include children.
In May 2016, George and Amal made a splash on the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival for the premiere of Money Monster.
At the end of 2016, the couple founded their own foundation – The Clooney Foundation For Justice. The organization works for human rights around the world with programs dedicated to fighting “systemic injustice against vulnerable communities: journalists, women and girls, defenders of democracy, LGBTI persons and minorities”.
In February 2017, news broke that Amal Clooney was pregnant.
“We are really happy and very excited. It will be an adventure,” says the actor.
On June 6, 2017, twins Ella and Alexander were born.
In September, the couple made their first appearance after the birth of their children at the Venice Film Festival.
In 2018, Amal talked about her husband to Vogue.
“It felt like the most natural thing in the world when I fell in love with him. Before this experience, I had always hoped that there could be a love that was overwhelming and didn’t require any weighing or decision making. It’s the one thing in life that I think is the most important determinant of happiness, and it’s the thing you have the least control over. Will you meet this person? I was 35 when I met him. It wasn’t obvious that this would happen for me. And I wasn’t inclined to get married or have a family if that wasn’t there.”
In an interview with Time magazine, Amal shared a little more about life at home.
“In my husband, I have a partner who is incredibly inspiring and supportive, and we have a home filled with love and laughter.”
“It is a joy beyond anything I could ever imagine. I feel so lucky to have found great love in my life and to be a mother is how I find my balance.”
In October 2022, George and Amal Clooney attended the premiere of ‘Ticket to Heaven’ along with George’s co-star Julia Roberts.
In December, George Clooney was honored at the Kennedy Center for Contribution to American Culture.
In July of this year, it was reported that the family planned to move to their house on Lake Como permanently. The couple spend a significant amount of time at the Italian estate and want to make it their main home with their six-year-old twins Ella and Alexander.
George and Amal took a trip this August to Venice for the annual film festival.
In September, the Clooneys gathered a host of celebrities for a gala dinner hosted by their foundation. Among the guests were Donatella Versace, Kate Moss, Cindy Crawford, Anne Hathaway, Nina Dobrev, Julianne Moore, Matt Damon, John Krasinski, Emily Blunt, Meryl Streep and others.
“At 52 I found the love of my life and I’m really happy,” says George Clooney, and the lovely Amal shares:
“Pretty soon I felt that no matter what happened, I would never want to be with anyone else. I couldn’t sleep when we were apart. And I’ve been told that I have a particular smile and head tilt when I read his messages or the notes he sometimes hides in my bag. Years later, none of that has changed. He is the person who has my complete admiration and also the person whose smile makes me melt every time.’
