The former lawyer of the Basin Directorate – Plovdiv Ivan Karabelov was detained for 24 hours after a report of domestic violence, he learned TrafficNews. The man was taken to the Plovdiv district after the woman with whom he previously lived on a family basis reported that she was a victim of aggression.
The signal was received on Saturday. Two months ago, due to strained relations, Karabelov and the woman he lived with separated, and their 2-year-old son stayed with his mother. The two were about to sign a visitation agreement. On Saturday, Karabelov, who lives in Saedinenie, came to pick up the child from the mother’s apartment in the “Smirnenski” district, but while she was putting the child in the car, the two quarreled. The dispute turned into a scandal, followed by a blow to the woman’s face. She called 112 and asked for help. The man started driving the car around the neighborhood, and another, stronger blow followed. In a telephone conversation, the Second District advised them to go to the police, but Karabelov refused. In the end, the police waited for them at the address in “Smirnenski” and then the man and the woman were taken to the district office for questioning.
Karabelov reported to the police that he was elected municipal councilor in Saedinenie Municipality from the list of GERB. He probably wanted to take advantage of the immunity enjoyed by candidates for councilors during the election campaign, introduced to protect them from police arbitrariness. But the immunity expires after the municipal councilor is elected.
After the expiration of the 24-hour measure, Karabelov was released, and the case was reported to the prosecutor’s office. The woman was sent for examination to Forensic Medicine.
