At the regional office, they stripped me to check if I was a man or a woman, transwoman Gabriela Bankova, who has been protesting in Sofia since Monday and has announced a hunger strike because she cannot change her identity card, told “24 Chasa”.
On Thursday afternoon, she was taken to the 4th regional office of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, on whose territory is the Courthouse. The reason was to clarify her identity.
The policemen who escorted Gabriela to the office, which is in the “Lozenets” quarter, were very careful. However, there she was spoken to by a senior police officer who spoke to her in the middle gender, using words like “creature”, the transwoman described her experiences. Then he explained to Gabriela that he appears as a man in the database of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. That is why her undressing was done by a man who also felt very uncomfortable, Gabriela claims.
The entire stay in the district lasted about 30 minutes, after which she was released. From there, Gabriela went directly back to the Courthouse, where her hunger strike continues. Now her lawyers were going to file a complaint, but Gabriela herself was unable to specify to which institution.
