Novak Djokovic has expressed hope that he will face Rafael Nadal at least once more. The rivalry between the two is among the most legendary in tennis, with the balance of matches between them going 30-29 in favor of the Joker. Nadal has missed most of the 2023 season due to injury, but is expected to return to the court in January.
The last match so far between them was in the quarterfinals of last year’s Roland Garros, where the Spaniard triumphed 6-2, 4-6, 6-2, 7-6(4), and subsequently won the title.
“It would be great for tennis to have at least one more match between me and Nadal. It is the biggest rivalry in our sport in terms of the number of clashes between us. I hope it will happen. He is an amazing fighter and never gives up. This is a quality that definitely deserves respect and admiration. His return to the court is undoubtedly incredible news for tennis,” said the world No. 1 after yesterday’s victory over Hubert Hurkac at the ATP Finals.
Jokera also commented on who he thinks are the players who will be the “supporting pillars” of men’s tennis in the future.
“An excellent foundation for the future has now been laid. The generation of Alcaras, Siner and Rune is very strong. Most likely, the three of them will take over as the leading figures in the future, but also in the present, as they have already won major titles and reached the top of the rankings. Young people are expected to be motivated and constantly looking for ways to develop, to become faster and stronger, to win trophies and be the best in the world.”
The Grand Slam record holder was asked if he was already thinking about next summer’s Paris Olympics.
“The season is not over yet. After the Finals, I have to participate in the Davis Cup, a tournament that is also very important to me. I would very much like to take the trophy to Serbia again. This is one of my main goals. Next week will be very important for our country and the whole team will give our best. The Olympics are still a long way off. I will have plenty of time to think about next season.”
