The Minister of Internal Affairs, Kalin Stoyanov, stated that there was an attempt to interfere in the work of the Ministry of Internal Affairs by the co-chairman of “We continue the change”, Kiril Petkov, but Stoyanov did not allow this.
“I thank the Prime Minister, who yesterday confirmed that a leader of a political party made an attempt to frame the Ministry of the Interior, but I did not allow it. I think it is unacceptable for a political leader to interfere in the work of the Ministry of the Interior, as Kiril Petkov did . I do not accept that verdicts are issued by television studios and social networks. We live in a country governed by the rule of law and everyone is innocent until proven guilty, including police officers,” said Stoyanov.
He said that in no European country has it been the practice, after protests like Thursday’s and much more serious mass disturbances, to throw out the resignation of the interior minister.
Interior Minister Kalin Stoyanov said he agrees 100% with Prime Minister Nikolay Denkov on the need for a thorough analysis of cases of police violence during Thursday’s protest. It is not agreed, however, that individual cases of violence should be placed under a common denominator with the work of the Ministry of the Interior.
“For the third time in the last 5 days, I will express my position: I do not tolerate and do not accept any form of violence – both against peaceful citizens and against police officers. Anyone who committed violence during the protest on Thursday – whether a police officer or citizens, will bear his responsibility. No one should doubt that,” he said.
Stoyanov added that he ordered internal checks and measures to prevent cases of violence.
He agrees 100% with Prime Minister Denkov that a thorough analysis of the cases of violence during the protest is necessary. He does not agree, however, that the work of the Ministry of Internal Affairs should be put under a common denominator with the units that have exceeded their powers.
“That’s why I congratulate the colleagues who did their job. You did a perfect job!” said Kalin Stoyanov
