Spanish police have detained three people in the investigation into the attempted assassination of the former leader of the conservative People’s Party (NP) in Catalonia, Alejo Vidal-Cuadras, reported Reuters.
Vidal-Cuadras was shot dead in central Madrid on November 9. The 78-year-old politician survived the attack but is still in hospital.
One of the suspects was arrested in the city of Malaga and the other two in Granada. Two of those arrested are Spanish nationals and the nationality of the third is unknown at this stage. The police are checking if they have any connection with foreign countries.
The investigation into the case is being conducted under the supervision of the anti-terrorist court, from which there is still no comment on the subject, Reuters reported.
Vidal-Cuadrae was the vice-president of the European Parliament for 15 years, from 1999 to 2014. He then became one of the co-founders of the Spanish far-right Vox party.
He is a major ally of the Committee of the National Council of Resistance of Iran, an exiled opposition organization that blamed the attack on the Iranian government.
