Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to oppose any sanctions against the country’s army, following reports that the US plans to cut aid to the Netza Yehuda battalion over alleged human rights abuses in the occupied West Bank, the BBC reported.
The BBC quoted Benjamin Netanyahu as saying he would “fight with all his might against such a move”. Earlier, the Axios news site reported that the US was specifically referring to the Israeli Netza Yehuda battalion. The BBC has reported that there are reports that the United States is poised to impose a ban on aid to foreign forces believed to be violating human rights. The media commented that Washington, which is Israel’s main ally, has never stopped its aid to the Israel Defense Forces.
Reuters reported that Israel’s military said Netza Yehuda was acting in accordance with international law.
Any decision to bar part of the Israeli military from receiving US military aid would be made under the “Leahy Act” of 1997, named after then-Senator Patrick Leahy. The law provides for the suspension of funding or training for foreign military units. “Netza Yehuda” is a special all-male section established in 1999. Ultra-orthodox Jews serve in it.
