Every year on April 22, people from all over the world and from different walks of life unite in a common cause of sustainability and climate action, marking Earth Day. When the actions of millions of people around the world are synchronized, an inclusive and impactful movement is created that is impossible to ignore. This year’s Earth Day Theme is PLANETS AGAINST PLASTICS! The theme focuses on building a collective commitment to tackle the plastics crisis by reducing plastic production by 60% by 2040 and building a plastic-free future, because recycling alone is not enough.

To achieve the 60% reduction target it is necessary to:

· raising public awareness about the harm of plastic to human health and also to biodiversity. You can read EARTHDAY.ORG’s reports to learn more about how plastics, microplastics and their additives can harm human health;

· phasing out single-use plastics by 2030 and enshrining these commitments in the UN Global Compact on Plastics on Plastic Pollution in 2024;

· advocacy for policies aimed at combating the environmental impact of fast fashion, which relies on the use of synthetic materials made from plastics such as polyester and nylon;

· calling for investment in innovative technologies aimed at finding sustainable alternatives to plastics, as plastics are made from oil and toxic chemicals.

Everyone can be part of the decision to create a future where the planet thrives without the burden of plastics.
