Former Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso, who is vice chairman of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), will meet with Donald Trump tomorrow, a senior Trump campaign official said, as the US ally continues to step up cooperation with the candidate. president of the Republican Party, reported Reuters.
Japan is trying to reach out to people close to Trump ahead of the Nov. 5 U.S. presidential election, in which the former president could return to office and revive protectionist trade measures and other contentious policies that have threatened to strain relations between allies.
Japan’s approach is multi-pronged and has included sending emissaries in recent months to meet with Trump allies and potential policymakers at think tanks linked to him, Reuters said.
Sunao Takao, the late Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s translator, is among those to be sent to strengthen ties with the Trump campaign, Reuters reported in March.
“Leaders around the world know that with President Trump we had a safer and more peaceful world,” Trump campaign senior adviser Brian Hughes said today.
“He is widely recognized as a leader who, with the support of the American people, kept our nation and allies safe, kept our enemies in check, and American workers were protected from unfair globalist trade policies.”
