Iran regrets EU sanctions – they should have been against Israel

--

European Union sanctions announced after Iran’s attack on Israel are “deplorable”. This is stated by Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdolakhian, quoted by “Reuters”.

He emphasizes that his country acted in self-defense.

EU foreign ministers yesterday reached an agreement in principle to extend sanctions against Tehran, agreeing to extend restrictive measures on the Islamic republic’s arms exports of any drones or missiles to Iran’s proxies and Russia.

“It is a shame to see the EU decide to quickly implement more illegal restrictions against Iran just because Tehran exercised its right to self-defense against Israel’s reckless aggression,” Amirabdolakhian wrote on the X social network. He called on the Union to impose sanctions on Israel instead of Iran.

EU countries still need to approve a legal framework before the expanded sanctions take effect.

Tensions between Israel and Iran escalated on April 1, when Tel Aviv struck the Iranian consulate in the Syrian capital Damascus, killing two generals and five officers of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard.

Tehran responded 12 days later by taking an unprecedented direct military attack against Israel with over 300 missiles and drones. However, the attack did not cause significant damage. Almost all of the missiles and drones were intercepted by Israeli, American and other allied forces.

Early on April 19, Israel struck a military airport near the city of Isfahan in Central Iran. However, Tehran downplayed the incident and said there were no plans to retaliate, a response likely intended to prevent a region-wide war.
