Debut for the Mercedes-Benz G-Class with electric drive. The model bears the designation G 580 and represents the first fully electric version of the off-road icon. The car combines tradition and progress like no other model before, say the Germans.
Like the conventionally powered variants, the body is placed on a supporting frame. The development team has modified and strengthened it to integrate the electric drive. The combination of independent double-wishbone front suspension and newly developed solid rear axle is also retained. The high-voltage lithium-ion battery integrated into the frame ensures a low center of gravity. With its usable capacity of 116 kWh, the range reaches 473 km according to WLTP.
The drive concept is innovative and includes four individually controlled electric motors located close to the wheels, which develop a maximum total power of 587 hp. and a maximum torque of 1164 Nm. Together with the selectable Low Range off-road demultiplier, they enable unique driving characteristics and exclusive functions. This makes it possible for the innovative G-Turn function to turn the car almost on the spot on loose or unpaved surfaces. The G-Steering function can provide a significantly smaller turning radius when driving off-road. The three-stage intelligent off-road crawl function is like autopilot for off-road driving – maintaining optimal drive while the driver focuses on the terrain.
Like the tested variants, the all-new Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ technology has up to 100% cross-country ability on suitable surfaces. The car remains stable on side slopes of up to 35 degrees. With a maximum wading depth of 850 mm, the electric G-Class surpasses its conventionally powered counterparts by 150 mm. The Low Range demultiplier increases the drive force with a special reduction factor. The all-new model generates the function of conventional differential locks in practice using intelligent torque vectoring. G-Roar provides a unique sound experience in the all-new electric G-Class. In addition, the team has developed a specific driving sound for certain events and an “aura” sound.
The all-new electric G-Class is immediately recognizable as a member of the legendary model line. The exterior gets a striking electric look with the optional black-paneled grille. A number of specific features distinguish the all-electric version from models with a conventional drive. Among them are the slightly raised engine cover and the so-called air curtains in the rear wheel sills, as well as the designer tailgate box. In combination with the new A-pillar trims and the roof spoiler strip, they contribute to optimizing aerodynamics.
The car is equipped as standard with the MBUX infotainment system, a multifunctional steering wheel in nappa leather and ambient lighting. Optional extras include keyless entry and start, temperature-controlled cup holders, a Burmester 3D surround sound system and a ‘see-through lid’. The redesigned Offroad Control Unit and the new Offroad Cockpit are available as options to enhance the offroad experience with additional digital features. At launch, the limited Edition One model is offered – with an expanded palette of standard features and exclusive design elements.
Prices at the market presentation of the Mercedes-Benz G580 with EQ technology start from BGN 288,000 including VAT, and the car is expected on our market in the fall in Silver Star showrooms. The scope of delivery includes an extended warranty of 2+3 years or 100,000 km.
