Beijing: US military support for Taiwan increases risk of conflict – Asia

China warned today that US military support for Taiwan only increases the “risk of conflict” along the Taiwan Strait. The warning was issued after the US Congress approved $8 billion in military aid to Taipei, AFP reported.

“I would like to point out that the US and Taiwan are strengthening their military ties, but this will not provide more security for Taiwan,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said.

“This will only increase the tension and the risk of conflict along the Taiwan Strait, and in the end it will be like shooting yourself in the foot,” Wang further noted.

The US Congress finally approved on Tuesday evening a package of 95 billion dollars to support allies Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan.

Taiwan’s newly elected President Lai Ching-te said the package would “strengthen containment of authoritarianism” and “preserve peace”.
