GERB and DPS introduced changes to the Gambling Act aimed at gambling advertisements, the two formations announced at a joint briefing in Parliament.
Why are changes needed?
The petitioners argued for the amendments to deal with gambling addiction and meet public expectations.
“It is no secret to anyone that in the last three years gambling-related addictions have been extremely increased in our society. This necessitated the taking of appropriate measures to limit them,” said Temenuzka Petkova from GERB.
“The bill has been maturing for quite a long time. It really meets public expectations and the debate in society for the past few years. Parents and organizations have repeatedly protested against this powerful gambling advertisement in the media,” added Yordan Tsonev from DPS. The ad
Yordan Tsonev pointed out that the most important part of the bill is the restriction of gambling advertising. “The bill prohibits advertising on television, in the media, including online and print media. Advertising is allowed only on billboards and away from schools. It remains only on sports equipment that is not intended for minors,” explained Tsonev. What else is foreseen in the bill?
The proposals in the draft law are related to the regulation of gambling activity, advertising and the distribution of funds made by gambling operators in terms of their social responsibility. The idea is that 50% of this contribution will go to the Ministry of Health and the funds will be used for the treatment of gambling addictions.
