Fishermen protested against the ban on white clam fishing – Society

--

An unprecedented ban on white clam fishing, changed from one to three months, caused the dissatisfaction of fishermen and fish processing enterprises along the Southern Black Sea coast. The ban takes effect on May 1. Today, nearly 100 representatives of the branch from the Southern Black Sea coast protested in front of the building of the Executive Agency for Fisheries and Aquaculture in Burgas with a request to cancel the order. They argue that the white clam’s breeding season is over and the ban is unfounded. In a complaint to the Ministry of Agriculture and Food, they sent their requests.

The order prohibiting the catch of white clam from May 1 to July 31 is published on the website of the Fisheries and Aquaculture Executive Agency. It was issued on April 16 by the Acting Minister of Agriculture and Food, Georgi Tahov. The protesting fishermen want the order revoked:

“The purpose of the ban is only to bankrupt a few processing companies that are involved in catching, processing and exporting. To put all these people on unpaid leave.”

“We don’t work for four months, just when the market is actually for us. They are currently pleasing a company from Varna, which appointed itself the director of IARA. They deal with rapani, and they mainly eat white clams.”

The order can be appealed in court, IARA management said.

“At the moment, the appeal period is running. It can be appealed administratively. If the relevant court considers that it is illegal, it will be canceled,” said Deputy Director Hristo Panayotov.
