The derby between Real Madrid and Barcelona last Sunday is still a hot topic in Spain, primarily because of the refereeing decisions. Referee Cesar Soto Grado preferred to disallow a goal by Lamin Yamal for 1:2, judging that the ball did not cross the goal line.

This controversy would have been avoided if La Liga had goal-line technology where the referee’s watch vibrated the moment the ball fully crossed the goal line. A tool used in the Premier League, Serie A, Bundesliga or Ligue 1.

“It’s not a perfect technology, and that’s the first reason. But it’s not just that: during the season “ghost goals” happen three or four times and if you add that it’s not perfect, the value is very high. This means investing between five and six million for La Liga and La Liga 2 to use it once and with doubts,” said La Liga president Javier Tebas in an interview with “Expansión”.

He also added that “with VAR, 99% of situations can be solved”, following the controversy that arose after El Clasico.
