A protest was held in Burgas against the ban on white clam fishing

--

A company from Varna has appointed a director of IARA and orders him what to do. Georgi Rahnev, manager of a processing enterprise, said this at a protest in Burgas against the ban on catching white sand clams. He did not name which company he was referring to, but announced that it was a Varna-based company that is engaged in catching rapani, namely clams, which are the main resource they feed on.

In fact, we have to feed the rapans so that the companies that catch them catch them.

he announced the introduced ban and added that “there has never been a study done in Bulgaria to find out exactly when the breeding period of the white mussel is.

Fishermen protested in front of the Executive Agency for Fisheries and Aquaculture (IARA) in Burgas because of the ban on catching white sand clams. It should enter into force on May 1 for a period of three months.

Today dozens of fishermen spoke out against this order. According to them, this is the first time such a long ban has been introduced. They propose that the ban be twice a year for one month each, when it is the breeding season.

IARA assures that the measure is to preserve the white mussel population. Konstantin Damyanov told BTA that the period for banning the catch of white sand clam is consistent with the reproduction period and is based on research by three institutes – two in Varna and one in Plovdiv.
