A criminal case against the governor of the Moldovan Gagauzia region has been filed in court, the Moldovan prosecutor’s office announced, as quoted by Reuters. This creates conditions for her to be sued.
Evgenia Gutsul is accused of channeling funds from Russia in 2019-2022 to finance the already banned pro-Russian party “Shor”, created by Ilan Shor, a pro-Russian businessman in exile, convicted of fraud in Moldova, BTA reports.
Last year, Gutsul won the elections for the head of the autonomous region. It has strained relations with the government in Chisinau, which fears that Russia and exiled oligarchs are interfering in the country’s political life.
She is known for her strongly pro-Russian views and her calls for closer ties with Moscow. If found guilty, she could face 2 to 7 years in prison, as well as a ban on holding public office.
