European Commissioner for Cohesion and Reforms Elisa Ferreira arrives today on a two-day visit to South-Eastern Turkey. She will visit areas recovering from the devastating earthquakes in 2023 with the help of EU support. This was reported to BTA by the EU Delegation in Turkey.

Ferreira will closely follow the recovery process in Gaziantep district.

Following the signing of the EU Solidarity Fund assistance agreement in February 2024, the Commission transferred the EUR 400 million grant to Turkey in line with the EU’s pledge of support to Turkey of on the €1 billion given at the International Donor Conference in March 2023.

This disaster, one of the worst in the country’s history, shocked us all. As a sign of solidarity with the Turkish people, the EU has decided to grant 400 million euros from the Solidarity Fund – the highest amount ever granted to a candidate country for membership, Ferreira said.

During his visit to Turkey, Ferreira will meet with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, Mehmet Kemal Bozai, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Finance Minister Mehmet Simsek, as well as Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya.

Tomorrow, in addition to Gaziantep, Ferreira will also visit the city of Nurdag – the worst affected by the earthquakes in the district of Gaziantep.

In the devastating earthquakes of February 6, 2023 with a magnitude of 7.7 and 7.6 in Southeastern Turkey, more than 53 thousand people died. Millions were left homeless.
