At a meeting today, a new chairman of the Electronic Media Council for the next year will be elected. The mandate of the current chairman of the regulator, Sonja Momchilova, expires at the end of the month, reports dnes.bg.
Sonia Momchilova was elected as the chairman of the Electronic Media Council for two consecutive terms. According to the Radio and Television Act, the chairman is elected by the members of the regulator by a two-thirds majority vote.
The chairman’s job is to represent the Council, convene and lead its meetings, establish relations with state authorities and media service providers, as well as with international organizations in the field of media services, and issue penal decrees for violations of legal regulations.
The composition of the media regulator is five members – the president chooses two, and the National Assembly – three. From the presidential quota are Sonia Momchilova and Gabriela Naplatanova, and from the parliamentary quota – Galina Georgieva, Simona Veleva and Prolet Velkova.
