India’s Election Commission said today it is seeking answers from the ruling Indian People’s Party and the opposition Indian National Congress over alleged wrongdoing by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and opposition leader Rahul Gandhi, Reuters reported, citing BTA.

India is producing the world’s largest election, taking place in seven phases, with votes expected to be counted on June 4. In their complaints to the commission, the Indian People’s Party accused Gandhi and the Indian National Congress accused Modi of delivering speeches that divided society along religion, caste and linguistic lines, the commission said.

In a speech at a campaign event on Sunday, Modi, who is running for a third consecutive term, called Muslims “intruders” and “those with the many children”. His speech was criticized by opposition groups, and the Indian National Congress filed a complaint with the Election Commission.

The Indian People’s Party, in turn, said in its complaint that Gandhi’s speech was intended to cause division on linguistic and cultural issues.

The Election Commission said it was awaiting responses from Indian People’s Party president Jagat Prakash Nada and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge.
