Taiwan appealed to China for trust and talks

--

China must have the confidence to talk to Taiwan’s legitimately elected government. This was stated by the newly elected President Lai Ching-te, quoted by “Reuters”.

He made his remarks at the appointment of his new national security and diplomacy team.

China considers the democratically governed Taiwan as its territory despite the island’s strong objections, and over the past four years has stepped up military and political pressure against Taipei in an attempt to assert its territorial claims.

Lai, who takes office on May 20, is considered by Beijing to be a dangerous separatist. He has repeatedly offered talks with China, but his offer has been rejected.

The challenge facing the new national security team is unprecedented, given the rise of authoritarianism and an ever-increasing China, Lai noted.

He again offered to talk to Beijing.

I very much look forward to China having the confidence to engage with the legitimately elected government appointed by the Taiwanese people. This is the right way to exchange between the two sides of the Taiwan StraitLai emphasized.

Beijing has repeatedly said that talks are only possible if Taiwan’s government accepts that both sides of the Taiwan Strait are part of “one China,” a principle rejected by Lai and President Tsai Ing-wen.
