British Princess Beatrice’s ex-boyfriend Paolo Liuzzo has died of a suspected drug overdose, the Sun reported. According to the publication, he died in a hotel room in Miami on February 7.

His body was transported back to his hometown of Long Island, New York, where a funeral took place on February 16. Officer Michael Vega of the Miami Police Department told the Sun on Wednesday that his death “was being investigated as an overdose” and that the investigation “is open and ongoing.” Additionally, an alleged longtime friend of Liuzzo claimed to the Sun that he had been in trouble before his death and that he “liked to party and gamble.” “He led a very crazy lifestyle and we all feared the worst would eventually catch up with him,” added the friend. “He was always borrowing money to pay off old loans. It became a vicious cycle,” the source added.

Luzio was in a relationship with Beatrice, William and Harry’s cousin, who the Sun claimed was “heartbroken” over her ex’s death. The pair began dating in 2005 when Beatrice, now 35, was 17 and he was 24. Her mother, Sarah Ferguson, publicly supported their relationship, despite the princess being a minor.

Their relationship ended publicly in 2006.
