Paris awaits the Olympic Games
A 16-year-old teenager was arrested in Marinier, France, on suspicion of preparing a jihadist attack during the Olympics, according to the National Anti-Terrorism Office of the Prosecutor. The news was reported by the French newspaper Le Figaro. The prosecutor’s office opened an investigation into a “criminal terrorist organization”. The teenager was detained as a precaution by police officers from the Main Directorate of Internal Security.
He was uncovered following a report to the local prosecutor’s office regarding disturbing statements posted on a secure Telegram messaging channel. The minor said he wanted to procure material to make an explosive belt “to die as a martyr in the name of the Islamic caliphate,” according to a police source.
The boy was detained by judicial police at his parents’ home. During the search of the home, investigators found handwritten documents, including an oath of allegiance to the Islamic State jihadist group. The suspect’s cell phone was seized.
At the hearing, the teenager admitted he wanted to carry out an attack during the Olympics “with a rifle or an explosive belt”. According to a police source, the minor – of French nationality – “was being monitored for radicalization”.
