Moh, eight years ago

There was blood on my hands, between my toes, splashes of blood were also stuck to my hair. It was slathered on my chest, and to my horror, I could even taste a few tiny drops on my lips.

Too much blood had also been spilled on the polished kitchen floor. No one could survive such blood loss, not even the monster at my feet.

My whole body was shaking, adrenaline still pumping through my veins. I dropped the broken bottle and its glass shattered on the ground and I fell to my knees.

My jeans were soaked in blood.

I stared at my tormentor. His lifeless eyes stared out of focus and his skin was losing its color. If I had been braver, I would have pressed my ear to his chest just to make sure that his cold black heart was silenced forever. But I couldn’t bear to touch him even now, even when he couldn’t hurt me anymore.

He’s not in. He is finally gone.

An uncontrollable cry welled up in my chest. For the first time in almost forever I could breathe. I sobbed. God, it felt so good. This time there were tears.

I shouldn’t have been relieved at that very moment, I knew it. I knew it was supposed to be how people should grieve the loss of life. But I couldn’t. At least not for his. Maybe that made me mean. All I knew was that tonight I had actually faced my greatest fear and survived.

He was dead. He couldn’t hurt me anymore. He was dead. It only took me a few more seconds to fully realize this fact.

Oh my gosh! He was dead.

My hands shook. There was a dead body and blood, so much blood. I was literally covered in blood. All my homework was splattered with it, and one big drop completely hid Lincoln’s face in the history book.

A sharp shiver ran through my body.

I stared at my hands as if I were Lady Macbeth. Get out, you bloody stain! I rushed to the kitchen sink, leaving a trail of bloody footprints in my wake. Oh god, I had to get the blood off me right away. I rubbed my palms together furiously. The blood had stained the cuticles around my nails and spilled under them. I couldn’t get it off, but that didn’t matter because I noticed that the red liquid was covering my entire arms. I started rubbing up as well. But then it ended up on my shirt, and I could see the coagulating drops in my hair as well. I moaned and almost cried. That didn’t matter. Blood wouldn’t come out.

Damn it! I leaned over the granite kitchen counter and looked appraisingly at the pink mixture of blood and water that had spilled over it, onto the floor, and into the sink.

There was no way to hide from it.

With great reluctance my gaze slid down to the body. A part of me that refused to obey logic expected my stepfather to rise again and attack me. And when that didn’t happen, my mind began to reason again.

What was I supposed to do now? Should I call the police? The justice system protected the children, so everything would be fine. They were just going to call me in for questioning.

But would they protect me? It’s not like I killed anyone. I killed one of the richest and most untouchable men in this world. It didn’t matter that I had done it in self-defense. Even in death, men like him always managed to pull away, even from the unthinkable.

And I would have to tell about it – to tell everything.

I feel dizzy.

But I had no choice. I had to surrender. Unless…

The monster whose blood was leaking onto our kitchen floor knew a man who knew another man…someone who could clean up the mess. I only had to sell a little of my soul to talk to him.

No cops, no questions, no foster parents or going to jail.

You know what? He could take all that was left of my soul. I just wanted to get out of it.

I rushed to the kitchen drawer where we kept all sorts of trinkets and my shaking hands struggled to open it. As soon as I did, I quickly found and grabbed the business card and read the strange contact information listed on it. Only one sentence was written on the business card. All I had to do was read it out loud.

I was afraid. If I did, there would be no going back.

My gaze darted anxiously around the kitchen. It was too late to turn back anyway.

I clutched the business card in my hand.

I took a deep breath and did what it said on her.

“Merchant, I want to make a deal.”
