On April 25, we pay tribute to one of the most important saints in Christianity – Saint Mark, one of the Four Evangelists and a close companion of the apostles Peter and Paul. This day is marked in the church calendar as a day of honor to him and is considered a name day for all bearers of the name Mark or Marco.

Mark, whose name means “fighter” or “manly,” was of Jewish origin, but he became a follower of Christ as a child. One of the main reasons for this is his mother, who respects Christianity and believes unconditionally in Jesus Christ, even having a personal relationship with him. Mark’s life took place in the 1st century, and he remains preserved in Christian history as one of the Four Evangelists.

Not only was Mark a close companion of the apostles Peter and Paul, but he followed them everywhere, admiring their example. According to historical records, he built his own church in Alexandria. This saint is known in both the Orthodox and Catholic Churches, and in the latter he is often known by the name Marko.

In the 68th year on April 25, Mark went to salvation, leaving behind a huge legacy of Christian faith and culture. He is known not only for his gospel writings, but also for his faithfulness and devotion to Christ.

The name Mark or Marco is also associated with the Roman god of war – Mars. This name, characterized by masculinity and fighting spirit, carries a meaningful message for all who bear it.

In Bulgaria, the name Mark or Marko may not be very common, but Saint Mark’s day is also celebrated in our church, being considered an important holiday for all Christians with that name.

Saint Mark, associated with the teaching and activity of the apostles, carries within himself the important mission of spreading God’s word and leading people to the light of faith. His life and work are an inspiration to many even to this day, and his feast day is a time to commemorate and honor his holiness and devotion. On this day, all who bear the name of Mark or Marco can enjoy special attention and greetings because they are celebrating their feast day, and all believers can take advantage of the opportunity to be inspired by the teachings and example of this great saint.
