French President Emmanuel Macron called on Europe to face the challenges of today’s world. In a solemn speech at the Sorbonne, where he had presented his European vision seven years ago, he wishedanother leap for Europe by 2030 to keep itself “strong, successful and humane”.

According to him, Europe has made progress in unity despite an unprecedented series of crises in recent years: Brexit, the covid epidemic and the war in Ukraine.

“We are in an unprecedented moment of global upheaval, of accelerating great changes, and my message today is simple. Our Europe is mortal, it can die, and it depends only on our choices.”

Macron is pushing to go further for the common defense of the European continent and a common military strategy. “Europe is in danger”, he emphasized and repeated his position that nothing should be ruled out to save Ukraine.

“The main and greatest danger to the security of Europe is that Russia wins the war of aggression that has started against Ukraine.”

For common European defense, the French president proposes the creation of a common anti-missile shield and a European military academy. He advocated his idea of a Schengen Council as a political structure for the internal security of the EU. For the economic rise of Europe, according to him, a “wall” of investments “between 650 and 1000 billion euros per year” is needed.

He developed the idea of Europe as a democratic digital community and proposed the age of 15 as the threshold for entering the digital space.

The nationalists “want to stay in the building of Europe without paying rent,” he said.

Seven years after his first keynote speech at the Sorbonne, Macron is trying to push his ideas for Europe just weeks before European elections threatened by the rise of the far right. The opposition called the speech “fruitless” and “hypocritical”.
