MEPs condemned Iran’s attack on Israel and called for sanctions

In a resolution adopted on Thursday, MEPs strongly condemned Iran’s unprecedented drone and missile attacks against Israel and called for additional sanctions against Iran. reports the Press Office of the European Parliament.

The European Parliament expressed serious concern about the escalation and threat to regional security following the Iranian attacks on 13 and 14 April. Members of the EP condemned the rocket attacks carried out by Iranian proxy forces such as Hezbollah and Yemen’s Houthis against the Golan Heights and Israeli territory.

They also deplored the attack on the Iranian consulate in Damascus on April 1, attributed to Israel. The resolution emphasizes the importance of the inviolability of diplomatic buildings under international law.

The European Parliament called for a reduction in tension and inclusion of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in the EU list of terrorist organizations. They called for the urgent introduction of sanctions and the targeting of more individuals and entities.

With Iran not complying with its obligations under the nuclear deal, MEPs called on the Iranian authorities to comply with their obligations and settle all outstanding issues. They condemned hostage diplomacy and called on the EU to take measures to free hostages and prevent their capture in the future.

The resolution welcomes the EU Council’s decision to launch the Aspides naval operation to ensure freedom of navigation off the coast of Yemen. MEPs urge the EU and its member states to consolidate and intensify all efforts to to ensure the safe and immediate release of all hostages from the vessel “Galaxy Leader”, including two Bulgarian, one Romanian and three Ukrainian citizens, who have been held by the Houthis since November 19, 2023.

The text also calls on Iran and its controlled groups to guarantee the release of the Portuguese-flagged vessel MSC Aries and its European crew.
