The resignation of the chairman of the National Assembly, Rosen Zhelyazkov, united PPDB, Vazrazhdane, BSP and Ima Talik Narod. 129 deputies voted “for”, 103 were against. The resignation was voted a day before the parliament went on vacation and de facto ended its activities.

The resignation request was submitted by the PPDB, which on Wednesday decided to join the opposition’s demand for Zhelyazkov’s removal. The initiative was initially by “Vazrazhdane”, and BSP joined them. “There is such a people” (ITN) asked to submit their reasons for his resignation.

According to PPDB, the Speaker of the Parliament abused his power and authority and worked in the interest of GERB. As specific reasons, the PPDB pointed out that Zhelyazkov violated the procedure for early termination of the mandate of the manager of the health fund Stanimir Mihailov and systematically abused the right to change the agenda of the National Assembly.

Toma Bikov from GERB declared the arguments frivolous and the demand for Zhelyazkov’s resignation purely political. Yordan Tsonev from DPS insisted on ending the debate on the resignation, which he described as disgraceful.

After nearly three hours of debate, the resignation was voted, and Rosen Zhelyazkov was dismissed from GERB and DPS with applause, and the deputy head of the National Assembly, Rositsa Kirova, also shed a few tears.

“I want to congratulate Vazrazhdane, PP-DB and BSP for the new coalition with ITN. This makes it much easier for us, that there will be no more questions about DPS, or PP, or assemblies. I think that at least 5-6 more caretaker governments will be lined up”. This was stated by GERB leader Boyko Borisov on the sidelines of the parliament.

He commented on the reasons for requesting the resignation of the chairman of the 49th National Assembly. He read the reasons of the former prime minister and current co-chairman of PPDB Kiril Petkov for violation of the regulations under Art. 48, paragraph 5 – draft decision regarding the need to provide a new building for the Constitutional Court, draft decision to amend and supplement the rules of the National Assembly, Law on Protection from Domestic Violence, Law on the Judiciary, Draft Law on the Control of Implementation of Restrictive Measures measures in view of Russia’s actions destabilizing the situation in Ukraine. “That’s why Rosen Zhelyazkov was accepted on his feet in the Ukrainian parliament, a shame for his colleagues from the DB, a shame.
