The General Prosecutor’s Office in Romania officially announced today that it has brought charges of crimes against humanity against former Prime Minister Petre Roman and former Deputy Prime Minister Gelu-Voican Voiculescu in the case of the June 1990 miners’ march, Agerpress agency reported.

Charges have also been brought against the former director of the Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI) Virgil Magurianu, the mining leader Miron Cosma, Adrian Serbu, who was an adviser to Petre Roman, Vasile Dobrinou, former commander of the Higher Military School for Officers of the Ministry of internal affairs, and to Peter Petre, former commander of military unit 0575 Magurele.

They were summoned to the prosecutor’s office today to be informed of the charges against them.

Former president Ion Iliescu is to be questioned by prosecutors at his home on Friday, as he is 94 years old and cannot go to the prosecutor’s office, Agerpress informed.

According to the military prosecutors, on June 11 and 12, 1990, the state authorities decided to launch a violent attack on the demonstrators protesting in University Square, who were peacefully opposing the then political majority. This attack illegally involved forces of the Ministry of Interior, Ministry of Defense, SRI, as well as over 10,000 miners and other workers from different parts of the country. The attack took place on June 13, 1990, resulting in four deaths, 1,388 physical or mental injuries and 1,250 political imprisonments, prosecutors said.
