“On Tuesday afternoon, the first case of whooping cough in the region was confirmed, it concerns a child aged 3 years and 6 months from the village of Boyadzhik, commune. Tunja, who was hospitalized in the infectious disease department of the Staro Zagora University Hospital on April 18. A case with APR for whooping cough has been confirmed,” said the director of RZI-Yambol, Dr. Radostina Kalcheva.

The child did not attend kindergarten, therefore quarantine of contacts is not necessary. The child was discharged on April 22, healthy and in good condition.

According to the city’s health inspectorate, there have been dozens of inquiries from pregnant women for vaccinations, but it is unclear whether sufficient quantities will be provided.

“Pregnant women in the last trimester could be immunized if they have concerns that they will not be able to protect the newborn until two months of age, when the first regular immunization begins,” said Dr. Kalcheva, director of the health inspection.

According to her, people are already coming for reimmunization, which is done with the same vaccine that is given at the age of 12.

“Yesterday came the first grandmother-to-be, who is worried that she could infect her grandchild. With us, we carry out immunizations for persons who are not on the immunization calendar for a fee, while all the mandatory immunizations according to the calendar are carried out at private doctors”, added Dr. Kalcheva.

Dr. Kalcheva reminds how important is the responsibility of personal doctors, but also of parents.

“GPs can delay children’s immunizations for up to three months after they reach the appropriate age. Parents very often postpone immunizations themselves, think that the children are not old enough and invent all sorts of reasons. We are working with the GPs to make maximum use of all the mechanisms to contact the parents and to immunize in a short period of time all children with missed immunizations against whooping cough”, urged Dr. Kalcheva.
