Today in Serbia the new school year begins; teachers will strike

For about 760,000 students and nearly 90,000 employees in the field of education in 1,829 primary and secondary schools in Serbia, the new school year begins today, the “Danas” newspaper reports.

This year, 65,000 first-graders will go to school for the first time. Unlike the previous year, on this September 1, all students will start studying in the classrooms according to the regular plan and programs, regardless of the coronavirus, notes the “Danas” newspaper.

The authorities have decided that wearing masks in schools is not mandatory and schools are returning to their usual way of working, which includes the possibility of field trips in the fall.

The new school year will begin in all primary and secondary schools in Serbia with the hearing of the national anthem. The anthem will also be heard in kindergartens.

The Union of Education Employees’ Unions has announced that on the first working day of the 2022/2023 school year, school hours will be reduced to 30 minutes due to a strike that the union is organizing because of the financial situation of those working in the field of education. The other three educators’ unions will not join the strike.
