The head coach of Bulgaria’s national basketball team, Rosen Barchovski, said after the defeat by Spain at the start of the European Men’s Championship that he had hoped the team would play a better game.
“I was hoping for a much more even match, but it didn’t work out. There is a difference in classes, it is clear and obvious. But we could have played better, especially in defence. The whole match we played weakly in defense and the struggle under the basket, these were terribly big problems for us”, commented Barchovski.
In the first half in attack we were timid and scared, without confidence, maybe we had too much respect for Spain. In the second half, we got better, the game was even, but we didn’t manage to fix the defense. I’m sure that the team will look much better in the next matches”, added the coach of the Bulgarian team.
Asked about the performance of naturalized American guard Dee Bost, Barchowski said: “For Dee Bost, I can say he’s an excellent player, but he’s not in good shape yet. I’m sure he will improve his game in time. For the team to play much stronger, its game must improve. This is beyond any comment. We can hardly compensate for its absence. We will not surrender.”
“The inclusion of Pavlin Ivanov is not a surprise, such is his role in the team. But, it wasn’t just him, the problem is that on our good offensive play, they put us back in every attack”, Rosen Barchovski also said, and about the fact that Alexander Vezenkov, the coach added: “I don’t want us to fall by 50 points difference. There is a question of honor here. I want the team to fight to the end.”
After an 11-year wait, Bulgaria is back at EuroBasket, but it started with a loss to Spain
