South Korea, Japan and the United States on tough measures against a nuclear DPRK

South Korea, Japan and the United States agreed on tough measures against a new nuclear test by North Korea. This was announced on Thursday by South Korea’s top security adviser, Kim Sung-han, quoted by Yonhap.

He added that the reaction of the parties will be different than in the past.

Kim Soon-han made the remarks after a tripartite meeting with US and Japanese colleagues Jake Sullivan and Akiba Takeo Akiba in Honolulu.

“We agreed that there should be no naive thinking or reaction that North Korea has conducted six nuclear tests and that a new test will be just another nuclear test,” Kim said.

“If North Korea conducts its seventh nuclear test, our response will certainly be different than before,” he added.

Officials in Seoul and Washington previously said the North appeared to have finished “all preparations” for a nuclear test and that he may be just biding his time.

Pyongyang held its sixth and final nuclear test in September 2017.

At the beginning of the month, the USA, South Korea and Japan participated in a joint ballistic missile defense exercise off the coast of Hawaii. These were the first such exercises since 2017, when relations between Seoul and Tokyo hit their lowest level in years.
