Acting Minister of Culture Velislav Minekov visited Plovdiv for the second time as a matter of urgency because of the demolition of tobacco warehouses, declared an immovable cultural value. He stated that he will not allow their demolition, NOVA TV reported.
“It is destruction that is more than an outrage. I will not allow it at any cost. They probably think I’m idle. They probably think I’m being bribed. They probably think I will be threatened in some way. It won’t happen,” Minekov threatened.
He left urgently for the city after it became clear that the warehouse was being demolished illegally. The Minister of Culture added that today he will sign a statement to prevent similar cases in the future.
Although he had earlier blocked the demolition of the buildings, late at night it continued. The police are still guarding the tobacco warehouse at 51 Hristo Botev Blvd. in the city under the hills. The Minister of Culture arrived around midnight, but the building had already been pushed and the workers had left.
The company hired to demolish the warehouse claims it has all the permits. The Directorate for National Construction Control also started an on-site inspection. A representative of the municipality of Plovdiv did not come to the place. They also refused to comment.
