Alexander Lazarov recorded another victory at the Majorca tournament, defeating Mikhail Kukushkin in a dramatic match that lasted more than three hours. The Bulgarian performed at a very high level against the former #39 and reached his first semi-final at the Challenger level, while climbing from #328 in the ATP live rankings.

Lazarov’s next opponent will be the seventh in the scheme Luka Nardi (#175).

The match started with an early break for Kukushkin, but Lazarov recovered the tie, after which the two exchanged another break for 3-3. In the course of the set, no one was able to break through, as the Bulgarian missed six set points at 5-4, as well as another at 6-5. In the end, it came to a tiebreak, in which Kukushkin had three consecutive opportunities to win the set. Lazarov parried the first, but the Kazakh took advantage of his next chance and prevailed 7-6(4).

In the second part, the Bulgarian was the first to consolidate his breakthrough and thus lead 3-1. However, Kukushkin pulled off a complete reversal before Lazarov broke his streak and restored the tie at 4-4. The Kazakhstani tried to regain the initiative, but our fourth racket recorded a very important break, which he subsequently sealed with a game to nil and thus leveled the score in the match after 6-4.

The third set proceeded in a manner analogous to the first – neither of them managed to break through, although Lazarov had three consecutive chances to do so at 5-5. A new tiebreak followed, in which the Bulgarian gained a comfortable lead, realizing two mini-breaks for 4-0. Kukushkin saved two of the five consecutive match points he faced, but Lazarov did not allow him to continue hoping for a comeback and triumphed 6-7(4), 6-4, 7-6(3) after 3 hours and 22 minutes of play.
