China will respond with countermeasures if the United States does not cancel the $1.1 billion arms sale it approved to Taiwan, a spokesman for the Chinese embassy in Washington said, quoted by the agencies.
According to the representative of the diplomatic mission, the possible sale “seriously threatens” American-Chinese relations.
“China will take the necessary vigorous and legitimate countermeasures in view of the development of the situation,” he said.
Earlier, the US government announced that it had approved the sale of $1.1 billion worth of US arms to Taiwan, including anti-ship and air-to-air missiles.
Before it can become a reality, it will also need to be approved by the US Congress, but according to people in the Democratic and Republican parties cited by Reuters, there is not expected to be any opposition to the deal.
