Russian tennis player Daniil Medvedev said that the level of play of Nick Kyrgios is so high that he compared it to that of two of the greatest tennis players of all time, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic.
World No. 1 Medvedev was dethroned in New York by the Australian, who cruised to a 7-6 (11), 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 success in his first quarter-final at Flushing Meadows.
“Today Nick played at the level that Novak and Rafa are playing at. He has a slightly different style of play because he doesn’t play mainly from the baseline and doesn’t engage in long exchanges. But at the same time he can win similar type of plays.
He is a tough opponent. He has an amazing serve. But you know from the baseline that you have no advantage against him because he plays well and has every shot in his arsenal. If he continues in the same spirit until the end of the tournament, he has every chance to win the title”the Russian spoke superlatives about his rival.
Medvedev, who will no longer be at the top of men’s tennis from Monday after losing in the fourth round of the US Open, was fighting to become the first tennis player since Roger Federer in 2008 to defend his US Grand Slam title.
The Russian said that his physical condition began to deteriorate as the match progressed, as a result of a fever he contracted during the race. “I got sick here in the US, for sure, during the grass court season, the draft from the air conditioners is ridiculous”he revealed. And here was the last title won by Kyrgios so far.
