The main opposition party in North Macedonia, VMRO-DPMNE, is convening this evening at 19:00 a meeting of the Executive Committee, at which a decision will be taken on the proposal to hold a referendum against the negotiation framework with the European Union and the constitutional changes requested by Bulgaria.

Unofficially, the referendum question will be “Are you in favor of terminating or canceling the treaty with Bulgaria”and tonight it will be decided whether it will be advisory or binding.

According to VMRO-DPMNE, such a referendum can be reached by collecting signatures of citizens. At least 100 qualified signatures from the party are needed to start collecting 150,000 citizen signatures.

VMRO-DPMNE explained that the main obstacle is Article 5 of the Negotiation Framework – it is based on the protocol between Bulgaria and North Macedonia, which contains all the controversial issues.

Hence the need to raise a question about the Good Neighbor Treaty, the opposition explained and emphasized that they are not against European membership, but against Bulgarian demands.

It is expected that after the meeting of the Executive Committee, the leader of VMRO-DPMNE Hristiyan Mitskoski will make a statement.
