The initiative for a referendum is a personal decision of Hristiyan Mitkoski, in order to keep his place in VMRO-DPMNE, according to the SDSM ruling in the Republic of North Macedonia.
In a message published shortly after the statement of the chairman of the opposition party, Hristiyan Mitskoski, in which he presented the decision of his party to call a referendum, the issue of which is related to the Treaty of Friendship with Bulgaria, the SDSM wrote that an initiative against the EU would not receive support even from the opposition parties, and opinions within VMRO-DPMNE itself are divided.
“In the wrong way, Mickoski is looking for salvation for his place with new attempts to paralyze the country and block its membership in the EU. A referendum against the EU, against the Macedonian language in the union has no support from the citizens and will not succeed. Citizens are for progress, for EU membership. This strategic goal has been set since the country’s independence and we are one step away from realizing the dream of many generations. The state will not stop, Mickoski cannot stop it. There will be no turning back or deviating from the European path. The SDSM, together with the citizens and all pro-European parties, will not allow this,” reads the message of the SDSM.
