Although there are many obstacles on the road to longevity, preventing chronic diseases is definitely a step in the right direction. The results of various studies show that a healthy product can help you do just that.

A new study published in the New England Journal of Medicine clearly shows the protective properties of walnuts.

Despite their modest size, they have huge health benefits, as they are rich in fiber, vitamins and antioxidants, writes “Daily Express”.

Cancer and cardiovascular diseases are at the top of the list of life-threatening pathologies. These diseases are considered one of the leading causes of death worldwide, as reported by the World Health Organization.

But the new study shows that walnuts can reduce the likelihood of developing cancer, cardiovascular and respiratory diseases.

The researchers examined the medical histories of more than 118,000 patients participating in various studies to exclude anyone diagnosed with cancer, coronary heart disease or stroke. The volunteers had to fill out a detailed questionnaire about their diet. They answered the questions at the beginning of the survey and then filled them in every two to four years.

Depending on how many walnuts the participants in the study consumed, they were divided into six groups, which the scientists observed for 30 years.

It was found that volunteers who consumed walnuts daily had a 20% lower risk of death. It has also been found that people who eat walnuts are less likely to die from cancer, coronary heart disease and respiratory diseases. The researchers added that the more walnuts the participants consumed, the lower the risk of death.

However, the benefits of walnuts do not stop there, because they also help in the fight against high cholesterol levels. Nuts contain a lot of but mostly unsaturated fat. Another reason why they may be effective in lowering cholesterol is that they are rich in fiber. They retain some of the cholesterol, preventing it from entering the bloodstream from the intestines. According to a study published in the journal BMJ Open Diabetes Research & Care, walnuts are extremely effective in fighting “bad” cholesterol. People who eat them daily have “significantly” lower levels of “bad” cholesterol.

Heart UK recommends eating a handful of walnuts and other nuts a day – that’s around 28-30g. You can choose the kind you like – from almonds to cashews, from hazelnuts to pecans – because their health benefits are undeniable.
