In a report published today, the International Atomic Energy Agency called for the creation of a safety zone to prevent a nuclear accident at the Russian-occupied Zoporozhye nuclear power plant, AFP reported, citing BTA.
“The current situation is intolerable”the agency wrote in the document. “Temporary measures must be taken urgently”she adds and recommends “the immediate establishment of a nuclear security and protection zone.
Bombing of the site and the surrounding area must cease immediately to avoid causing further damage to the facilities.”emphasizes the IAEA and says that it is ready to start consultations in this direction.
The agency also notes the extremely stressful conditions under which Ukrainian personnel work.
Uncertainty has reigned for weeks around the plant, which is Europe’s largest, and the site has been shelled, which Kyiv and Moscow blame each other for.
After much negotiation, an IAEA delegation visited the headquarters on Thursday. Two agency inspectors will remain on site permanently.
On the occasion of the agency’s report from its visit to the headquarters, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed hope that it would be objective. Last week, Zelensky reproached the IAEA for keeping silent on the issue of the demilitarization of the nuclear power plant area.
