The Russian-appointed commandant of the occupied Ukrainian city of Berdyansk died of wounds he received after his car was blown up today, world agencies reported, citing the occupation authorities.

They reported that explosives planted in Artyom Bardin’s car were detonated. The attack took place near the building of the Russian-appointed military-civilian administration of Berdyansk in the center of the port city in southeastern Ukraine’s Zaporozhye region.

Bardin was taken to hospital in serious condition, where he died from blood loss and his wounds. The blast damaged three more cars that were unoccupied.

A shootout broke out after the attack. Russian-appointed authorities in Berdyansk said they were looking for “Ukrainian saboteurs” who carried out the attack.

Russia captured the town in Zaporozhye Oblast in late February, in the early days of its invasion of Ukraine. In recent weeks, Ukrainian armed forces have launched a counter-offensive to regain lost territory in the south, focusing their efforts on the neighboring Kherson region.

A high-ranking police officer was killed in a bomb attack in Berdyansk late last month.
